Worm drive differentials do not use friction plates, but rather the wedging action of spearating sprial pinion gears. This type of differential is unique in that it increases traction, but does not affect the steering, and there are no friction plates to wear. It allows normal differentiation without adverse effects on steering or chattering when cornering. Only when there is a loss of traction will power transfer occur.
